Primary Uses
Voluntary & Stress-Free Swallowing: The rounded tip and specialized texture stimulate the natural swallowing reflex, causing chicks (like cockatiels and conures) to eagerly take the tube without panic.
High-Volume, Safe Breeding: Highly favored by breeders managing multiple clutches. Unlike flimsy butterfly tubes, the imported red tube easily sucks up thicker formula and delivers it in seconds.
Secured Against Accidental Ingestion: Premium imported setups feature a robust connection or barb that locks onto a standard Luer lock syringe, meaning the tube will not slip off inside the bird's throat.
Species Versatility: The smaller red tubes (often sized around 2x4mm) are specifically recommended for lovebirds, cockatiels, conures, and small raptors.
How to Use It Safely Step-by-Step
Crop tubing is an advanced technique. If you are inexperienced, have a professional or avian vet guide you visually first.
Assemble and Secure: Fit the red silicone tube onto your syringe (typically a 10ml or 20ml reusable syringe). Double-check that it is firmly locked.
Measure the Length externally: Hold the tube next to the bird’s body from the tip of the beak down to the crop to gauge exactly how deep it needs to go.
Straighten the Neck: Gently secure the chick's head from behind, lifting up slightly to vertically align the esophagus.
Insert from Left to Right: Enter the left side of the beak, slide smoothly over the tongue, and aim toward the right side of the bird’s throat (the esophagus sits on the bird's right, while the windpipe is in the center). Slide the tube down to the pre-measured depth.
The Touch Test: Feel the lower neck with your thumb and forefinger. You should feel two distinct tubular shapes: the rigid windpipe and the soft red silicone tube. If you only feel one, the tube is in the windpipe—abort immediately.
The "3-Second Rule": Smoothly depress the plunger to fill the crop. Once done, swiftly but gently withdraw the tube straight out to prevent any formula from dripping into the throat.
Sanitize: Clean the tube internally and externally with hot water and disinfectant. Because it is high-quality silicone, it can handle repeated sterilization.
